Did you know that people have been celebrating Dia de los Muertos in Mexico for hundreds of years? Señora Dolby and Señora Wilkinson set up an ofrenda in our library to help teach us about this multi-day celebration.

Ciencias: The Crayon Rock Cycle
Our igneous rock, the crayon, went through some weathering and erosion until it turned into sediments. Later, these sediments were compacted and cemented into a new rock, the "Sedimentary Rock". With heat and more pressure, the sedimentary rock went through some transformation and changes. It now turned into a "metamorphic rock". Our rock continued the cycle and became magma. The magma cool off and our totaly new "igneous rock" was formed.
Erosion tools: plastic knives and a pencil sharpenner magma: hot water

Work in progress...
-We learned and used some of the Barbara Reid plasticine techniques ( spreding, shapes) - we studied in details Barbara Reid ilustrations -we watched videos of Barbara Reid working on some of her illustrations Our art represents parts of the the song "El genio" Barbara Reid BooksWatch more videos

1. Figure out the pattern rule - How many it is growing by each time (+_____)
2. How many fichas are missing in the colored out section? 3. If the pattern continued, how many fichas would be in the next step? Science ExperimentStudents are growing crystals Social Studies ProjectSign LanguageEvery Friday students will learn sign language with Jordan, a grade 12 student. Our fabulous artists: - got inspired by these two extraordiary books " Story Stones" and Rock Art" - found their very own special rock - used acrylic paint and added details - practiced making tints (adding white to a colour) and shades (adding black to a colour) - wrote brilliant stories about their painted rock Story StonesLearning how to... - add adjetives to write interesting sentences -use synomys (beautiful is in jail) - paint more than one rock to be part of the story Active and Healthy Life Style- ball games - hula hut battle : a team building game Scientific Method- Students follow the Scientific Method for each of the tests done on the minerals: Ask a question/make predictions/do an experiment/ make observations/draw conclusions -Hardness test on different minerals ( very soft to very hard) fingernail-penny-metal nail- emery file - Vinager Acid Test - Magnetism test Fiction Books- Rocks are characters in many story books we have read - Moonlit Pumpkins
Math & SpanishStudents practiced: -increasing patterns - place value game - working with syllables to make words - Spanish song "El Genio" Uh oh! The box of minerals came all mixed up and now we don't know which one is which! We know sulfur is the stinky one but what about the rest? This week our little scientists explored mineral classification using lustre, magnetism, color, streak, hardness, and acid testing (vinegar). Hardness TestingLittle Scientists...-observing various type of minerals including gemstones -discussing in small groups the type of lustre observed in minerals and rocks - using instruments such as magnifiying glasses and flashlights to enhanced their sight -sketching and drawing their birthstone -reading and analizing interesting facts of their birthstone - differentiating whether is a legend or a fact Birthstones -gemstones sketches Museo de rocas y minerals Thank you to all the students for contributing to our class museam. We have very interesting rocks and minerals that students can look at and engage in meaningful conversations. Each person picks 3 cards with his/her eyes closed. 2. Arrange the cards to make a 3-digit number. Each player says his/her number out loud to the other player. After this the players cannot re-arrange their cards to change their number 3. One person rolls the dice - If the number rolled is PAR (even -2, 4, 6) the person with the greatest 3-digit number wins. If the number rolled is IMPAR (odd - 1, 3, 5) the person with the lesser 3-digit number wins. 4. Winner takes all 6 cards into his/her 'bank' 5. Repeat taking turns rolling the dice. To modify the game: - Try playing with two, or three dice. Roll the dice, add them together. - Change the number of cards each player takes to play with 2-digit, 4-digit, or 5-digit numbers. What an exciting first couple weeks of school! The grade three students have been hard at work settling into their new routines and getting to know their new classmates and teacher. In Social Studies we have begun exploring the idea of quality of life. So far we have discussed factors that contribute to quality of life such as: access to health care (doctors and clinics), protection from harm (police, firefighters), clean air and drinking water, strong relationships with friends and family, healthy food, and education. Two of the big ideas we like to emphasize is the difference between NEEDS and WANTS and how someone's quality of life can change throughout their lifetime. A conversation at home about this concept is always valuable. Math for month of September has us working on general number sense up to 1000. This is a concept we will continue to build on throughout the year. So far we have been representing numbers in a variety of ways (with manipulatives, in pictures, symbolically, and by breaking down the number to show a variety of equations), and math games solidifying basic skills such as: identifying if a number is even or odd, greater than or less than a given number, and recognizing a 3 digit-number orally in Spanish. As a class we have been working on self-regulation and emotional control with the Zones of Regulation. This support system is used school wide here at Eugene Coste. Our library day is Thursday, as is mail day! We look forward to meeting with you all at our meet and greet conferences on Thursday and Friday of this week. English Language Arts: R-Controlled Spelling patterns Math: We illustrated, concretely and pictorially, the meaning of place value for numerals to 1000. We also played games that reinforced this concepts. Spanish: We learned to sing a song titled: "Mis amigos del Mar". The following is the vocabulary learned. We had small dialogs among us using these vocabulary words to reinforce our Spanish communication skills. Vocabulary: -cangrejo- Crab -Tiburon- shark -calamar- Squid -camaron-Shripm - ballena-whale Social Studies: Quality of life Those who have mostly happy feelings are said to have a good quality life and those with mostly sad feelings have a poor quality of life.
In this story some of the characters exhibit happy feelings and others exhibit sad feelings. Students identified the character's feelings and pointed to evidence from the story to support their observations. |
