Lets see who can copy down a list of words first. But wait - each student will receive a different size and style of paper, as well as a different size, shape, and color of pencil. It didn't take long for the students to see that our test was not fair. It is important for an experiment to be a fair test. You conduct a fair test by making sure that you change one factor at a time while keeping all other conditions the same. To insure that your experiment is a fair test, you must change only one factor at a time while keeping all other conditions the same. Scientists call the changing factors in an experiment variables and those that stay the same constants. Testing support shapesQuestion: Will a square shape support more mass than an arch shape?Variable: The shape of the index card
Constants: Amount of plastercine supports and placement, material and size of index cards, testing surface, weight increments (increasing by the same amount in the same order for each shape). Mental Math Strategies for facts up to 18Fact learning refers to the acquisition of the 100 number facts relating to the single digits 0-9 in each of the four operations. Mastery is defined by a correct response in 3 seconds or less. This week students have been developing and using thinking strategies to recall answers to basic facts. These are the foundation for the development of other mental calculation strategies. When facts are automatic, students are no longer using strategies to retrieve them from memory. Strategies learned this week: Addition Facts Extended to 10s and100s Doubles Doubles the # +1 Plus Zero Facts Make 10 or 100 Social Studies: Life in TunisiaGrade 3 students are learning to appreciate how geographic, social and cultural factors affect quality of life in communities in India, Tunisia, Ukraine and Peru.
