What an exciting first couple weeks of school! The grade three students have been hard at work settling into their new routines and getting to know their new classmates and teacher. In Social Studies we have begun exploring the idea of quality of life. So far we have discussed factors that contribute to quality of life such as: access to health care (doctors and clinics), protection from harm (police, firefighters), clean air and drinking water, strong relationships with friends and family, healthy food, and education. Two of the big ideas we like to emphasize is the difference between NEEDS and WANTS and how someone's quality of life can change throughout their lifetime. A conversation at home about this concept is always valuable. Math for month of September has us working on general number sense up to 1000. This is a concept we will continue to build on throughout the year. So far we have been representing numbers in a variety of ways (with manipulatives, in pictures, symbolically, and by breaking down the number to show a variety of equations), and math games solidifying basic skills such as: identifying if a number is even or odd, greater than or less than a given number, and recognizing a 3 digit-number orally in Spanish. As a class we have been working on self-regulation and emotional control with the Zones of Regulation. This support system is used school wide here at Eugene Coste. Our library day is Thursday, as is mail day! We look forward to meeting with you all at our meet and greet conferences on Thursday and Friday of this week.
