Traditional Peruvian and Chilean Arpilleras are brightly-colored patchwork pictures stitched onto cloth. Arpilleras typically portray rural life in the Andes mountains. Students tried their own paper versions and wrote about them in Spanish! This past Tuesday, May 23rd, Eugene Coste had the honour of presenting to the Board of Trustees. Our students opened the meeting by singing O Canada. Sra. Greenlaw, Sra. Castro, and Sra. Jackie, as well as a handful of student speakers, presented our interdisciplinary community project to the Board and shared a bit about how we do math within the bilingual context.
Please visit the following link to see the video of our presentation. CBE Board Presentation - May 23 - Eugene Coste School Board Of TrusteesEnglish Language Arts: Summary & Spelling patternsWe read the book La Rue for Mayor and as a class wrote a summary of it. Students will continue to work on summarizing short or known stories for the next few weeks. Spelling: Words that end in -tion and -sion Español: Cuentos de hadasWe are learning how to write fairy tales in Spanish Arte: La ImprentaStudents: - learned to create a stamp by layering card stock shapes into a desire design Ciencias: Hearing and SoundStudents: -explored the concept of vibration through experimentation -learned about the anatomy of a human ear Matemáticas: multiplicación y division
Social Studies: Working TogetherStudents: - reflected on how choosing leaders, making decisions, and working together peacefully are carried out in the classroom, school and community - worked in groups to find out what they can about school, community, family and government practices in an assigned community in India, Tunisia, Peru or Ukraine - wrote a speech about changes they will bring to their communities if they were to be elected as leaders, presidents or mayors -learned about the voting process during elections Questions to help guide students in their research How are decisions made in the communities? Who is responsible for making the decisions? How are the various leaders chosen in the communities (e.g., within families, within schools, within communities, within government)? Student's Speeches
Que Pasa @ The Jubilee Auditorium
On Monday, May 8, Spanish bilingual program school students from across the CBE came together at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium for an evening in celebration of Spanish language, music and culture. Ten Spanish bilingual schools were represented by over 750 student performers in an extravaganza of song, dance and art. Please visit the CBE website for more information and presentation photos http://www.cbe.ab.ca/news-centre/Pages/que-pasa-que-show-2017.aspx
For photos specific to our group of grade 3's, please visit the photo section of this blog under MAYO. Musica: Madre Tierra (Oye)
Students in grade 3 learned to sing and dance this fun song for our performance on May 8th.
English Language Arts: Poetry writing
Students:
-Brainstormed and classified NOUNS, -ING VERBS, ADJECTIVES that described and were connected to the word mother. -Followed the poem structure called "the Diamante" to write their poetry, in where the text forms the shape of a diamond. Line 1: Noun or subject - one word Line 2: Two Adjectives that describe line 1 Line 3: Three 'ing words that describe line 1 Line 4: Four nouns - the first two are connected with line 1; the last two are connected with line 7 Line 5: Three 'ing words that describe line 7 Line 6: Two adjectives that describe line 7 Line 7: Noun Synonym for the subject Matematicas: Multiplicacion y Division
Students:
-Played a series of math games to develop understanding of mulplication of numbers up to 25 - Practiced their division skills making equal groups from numbers less than 30 - Students who have already mastered multiplication and division were given larger numbers to work with and more ambiguous word problems to continue moving their skills and understanding forward - Read the story Llaman a la Puerta por Pat Hutchins - Retelled the story in the next five boxes, wrote five mathematical sentences that are presented in the story. In the last two boxes students made up their own final parts of the story. Arte in progress: PrintMaking
Students:
-continued learning about the cultures and arts from Peru, Ukraine, India and Tunisia -read about Incas' art work with gold -transferred a Peruvian print of their choice to styrofoam using a pen - will continue working on the next final steps to create a print Humanitarian Design
Students were visited again by our friends over at CAWST (Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology). This time they were given a humantiarian design challenge and were asked to think of potential ways to respond to a water/sanitation need. Students created prototypes of their designs and presented to the group for feedback.
Interdiciplinary Project
The grade 3s are wrapping up their community building projects and getting ready to share their hard work at our Academic Sharing night (Thursday, May 18). We had so much fun working on a project that incorporated so many difference disciplines. Great work grade 3s!

What is digital citizenship?Digital citizenship can be defined as the norms of appropriate, responsible behavior with regard to technology use.
Important take aways from our activity:
If you are interesting in continuing this discussion with your son/daughter please feel free to use this book as a starting point. As part of our two Science building units - 'Testing Materials and Designs', and 'Building with a Variety of Materials', students are asked to follow the scientific method and engineering design process to observe, set problems, explore solutions, and create. Applying the Design Cycle to Tower BuildingProblem: Most of the original plans for our student created communities included towers but many groups struggled to construct one that would remain upright.
Observation: Students researched a variety of towers from around the world, from our very own Calgary Tower to the Tokyo Skytree. They noted that all these towers had a sturdy and robust foundation. Building Challenge: Build a tower out of recycled materials that is at least 50cm high and can support a 500g weight during an "earthquake" (gentle table shaking) and a "windstorm" (the teacher's fake sneeze). Resiliency Challenge: Accept when initial designs and prototypes are not successful and attempt to learn from the failure. Failures are steps towards success. Take what you have learned and apply it to the next prototype. *Did you know that Edison had over 1000 prototypes before he made his first working lightbulb? Constraints:
Students were encouraged to test as they built, constantly making minor adjustments to their designs as needed. If the original design did not work (as almost all of them initially failed), students were encouraged to see the failed prototype as a learning opportunity. Each failure taught us something about the challenge. Students were regularly given feedback to improve their design, and were allowed to repeat the design process until they were successful, or we ran out of time. Photos from our challenge can be found here. Towers were sent home and students are encouraged to continue to design process (research - seek feedback - improve).
Students have been learning all about the strategies they can use when looking at multiplication problems. As Equal GroupsThe Array ModelRepeated AdditionMultiplication CityStudents used windows in buildings to further explore multiplication as an array model.
Interdisciplinary Building ProjectStudents are - Planning and building a community that explores quality of life through services (Social Studies) - Working in small groups and learning to collaborate (Health) - Planning a budget that will allow their group to buy materials and build their community with only 1000 'credits' (Number Sense - Math) - Following shape and space specifications set out for their community (Measurement- Math, 3D shapes) - Exploring the properties of a variety of materials and designs, building and testing structures (Science) - Communicating in Spanish (SLA) - Having fun Studio BellOur field trip to Studio Bell was a success. Thank you Jackie for planning this amazing activity for us. Students were introduced to the basics on how the human hearing works. We will continue with the sound and hearing Science unit for the following weeks. Math-Perímetro |
